In his thirteenth term representing Wisconsin's Seventh District, Congressman Obey is the chairman of the Joint Economic Committee. Obey was born in Okmulgee, Oklahoma in 1938. He received a masters degree from the University of Wisconsin. He then worked as a real estate broker. He lives in Wausau, WI.

The Joint Economic Committee, formed by Congress in 1946, is currently made up of twelve Democrats and eight Republicans whose members are evenly split among the House and Senate. The aim of the Committee is to maximize employment, production, and purchasing power and take a macro view of the economy to expose long-range trends. The Committee releases a report every March that responds to the annual report from the President's Council of Economic Advisors.
